River Valley Granite Worktops in a Beautiful Harrogate Kitchen

There is something about natural granite that is hard to replicate.Every slab has its own movement, colour and detail, which means when you choose granite for your kitchen, you are not simply choosing a worktop colour. You are choosing a completely natural piece of stone that is unique to your home.That was exactly the appeal of River Valley Granite in this beautiful kitchen in Harrogate.The kitchen had a simple, straight-line layout, but the worktop itself stretched almost 4 metres across the room, creating a fantastic uninterrupted run of natural granite.

River Valley Granite with natural character

River Valley Granite is a great example of why we love working with natural stone.The surface has a mixture of natural tones and movement running through it, giving the worktop plenty of depth without feeling too overwhelming. When you stand back and look across a longer run, you start to appreciate just how much detail there is within the slab.Unlike manufactured surfaces, granite is formed naturally over thousands, and in fact millions, of years beneath the earth. The colours, minerals and patterns you see are the result of that natural formation process.That means no two pieces will ever be the same.For us, that is part of the appeal.

You can choose a granite based on its overall colour and character, but the finer details within the stone belong to that slab.

Almost 4 metres of granite

The main worktop run stretched almost 4 metres, giving the kitchen a fantastic amount of usable preparation space.We carefully fabricated the granite around both the sink and hob cutouts, making sure everything was accurately positioned before the stone was installed.Long runs like this need careful planning from the beginning. Everything from the measurements and templating through to the fabrication and installation needs to be right, particularly when working with a heavy natural stone like granite.The result is a long, clean run of River Valley Granite that feels like it was always meant to be there.

A classic bullnose edge

The worktops were finished with a bullnose edge profile.The rounded edge gives the granite a softer appearance and works particularly well in a kitchen where you want the natural stone to feel substantial without looking too sharp or overly contemporary.It also gives you a lovely smooth edge to run your hand across, which is one of those little details you appreciate every day.We also fitted matching granite upstands, carrying the same material from the worktop onto the wall for a neat and consistent finish. Protecting the walls from any spills.

A dropped windowsill in granite

One of the more unusual details on this project was the dropped windowsill.Rather than leaving the existing area separate from the worktops, we fabricated the granite to follow the shape and level of the window, creating a bespoke dropped sill from the same River Valley Granite.It is a detail that helps bring the different elements of the kitchen together and makes much better use of an area that could otherwise have been overlooked.It also gives the window a much more finished appearance, particularly when viewed alongside the long worktop run.
